Mouse Genome Conference: Introduction

Bienvenue!

The ancient city of Strasbourg, France is the site of the 19th International Mouse Genome Conference. Nineteen years ago in Paris, France, this meeting began by providing a forum for promoting the understanding of the mouse genome.

Initially, the focus was on building physical maps, understanding mouse strains and their variation, and developing new genetic strategies for modeling human disease.

First, finding the genes was the emphasis, and now, understanding the functional relevance of these genes is a major goal of the mouse genetics community. Today, with a draft of the mouse genome sequence available, and finished sequence expected within a year, focus remains on modeling human diseases, and identifying new genes involved in simple and complex genetic disorders. New technologies are still an emphasis, but are now moving towards understanding evolutionarily conserved non-coding sequences and developing phenotyping strategies to understand mouse biology and physiology.

As we approach the 20th anniversary of this annual meeting, we can reflect on the successes, and look to the changing future of the meeting and the founding society, the IMGS.

Conference Speakers

The conference will feature a number of distinguished keynote speakers including the Verne Chapman Memorial Lecture given by Yoshihide Hayashizaki . In addition, platform presentations will be selected from contributed abstracts, each presenter will have approximately 15 minutes to present their paper including question/discussion time.

Poster sessions will also take place during the program which will enable all interested parties to present their work. Two discussions workshops will be held. The first, organized by Deanna Church will discuss Community into Sequence Annotation . The second, organized by David Threadgill , will discuss Involvement in the Complex Traits Consortium .
